Addison disease

Addison disease (chronic adrenal insufficiency, hypocorticism, hypocorticolism, hypoadrenalism) is an endocrine disorder characterized by decreased production of steroid hormones (glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids) by the adrenal cortex.

The condition may be due to developmental abnormalities of the adrenals, inborn errors of steroid synthesis, or may be caused by destruction of the adrenals by an autoimmune process, tumor, infection or hemorrhage.
