Langerhans cell sarcoma

Langerhans cell sarcoma is an aggressive high-grade neoplasm of a Langerhans cell lineage.

The neoplastic cells exhibit malignant cytologic features (hyperchromatic nuclei, prominent nucleoli, high mitotic rate). Immunophenotyping and/or ultrastructural studies are required to identify the Langerhans cell derivation. The cells retain cytoplasmic Birbeck granules, as well as staining for CD1a, S100 and langerin, although the latter can be patchy.
